Young parents in the program go through a series of training sessions to learn about June's Centre and public speaking. They then go to high schools, colleges and universities, as well as agencies and community groups to share what they have learned from their experiences as teen parents.
Participants in the Community Education program are routinely involved in tours of June's Centre. They have been interviewed for radio, TV and print - and rewarded with rave reviews from all audiences. They talk about being a teen parent and their experiences at June's Centre. Then they open up for questions from the audience.
This program accomplishes many things. Public education about the needs of young parents and their children is the essence of this program. Combating stereotypes and the stigma that attaches to young parents is a very important aspect of the program. We also want to inform potential participants about the many programs and resources that June's Centre offers.
Another significant part of the program is training future service providers, such as Early Childhood Educators and health providers to be sensitive to the needs of young parents and their children. And perhaps most importantly, it boosts the confidence and self-esteem of the participants.
The Community Education program is just one of the many ways that June's Centre connects with the community and makes young parents realize that they are an integral part of it.
