Volunteer Opportunities
June's Centre highly values the involvement of community members as volunteers. There are a variety of opportunities for volunteers at June's Centre. Our Volunteer Coordinator attempts to match as well as possible the interests of volunteers with the needs of June's Centre.

We are always interested to hear about special talents volunteers possess which they may be able to share with the parents and children at June's Centre.

Nursery Volunteers
The nursery is a warm and welcoming central part of June's Centre. It is filled with brightly coloured toys, comfy rocking chairs, cribs and high chairs. It is where the stimulating, loving and quality care for the children happens. The Nursery Volunteers assist and provide childcare for infants and children of the teen mothers using June's Centre Nursery. This may include physical care - feeding, changing, and sleeping routines.

Volunteers are often responsible for social and emotional care, providing stimulation for physical and cognitive growth and helping to ensure that the child feels emotionally secure in a different environment other than his or her home.

Volunteers form informal friendships with teen mothers and pregnant women spending time in the nursery. This could involve casual conversation and sharing of information about child care and child development in a non-judgmental manner. If any issues arise in conversation with adults that appear to require counselling, volunteers encourage participants to talk to the counsellors at June's Centre about the issue.

There are opportunities to work in our nursery in the daytime from Monday through Thursday as well as in the early evening hours of Monday and Tuesday.

Labour Support Volunteers
June's Centre has a dedicated team of Labour Support Volunteers. They have been trained to support women emotionally and physically during her labour.

A Labour Support Volunteer may be involved in various aspects of the pregnant teen's life before she has her baby. Going with her to prenatal classes, developing a birth plan, meeting parents, friends and partners the women may want at her birth. A Labour Support Volunteer can be present during the young mother's entire labour and delivery. She may go to the mother's home and accompany her to the hospital.

Our Labour Support Volunteers are also trained to help the new mother with breastfeeding after the baby is born.

Swap Shop Volunteers
June's Centre has a Swap Shop filled with baby clothes and equipment, clothes for the mothers and small household items. Families in the community who are finished with these items donate them to June's Centre. Public donations arrive daily, and Swap Shop volunteers are needed to sort items, organize display shelves, and when appropriate help the teens to find the ideal item.

Donations that are not appropriate for the teen parents are separated by the Swap Shop volunteers, bagged and sent to organizations that can use them.

June's Centre Swap Shop makes a huge difference in the lives of the young families. The mothers have access to gently used clothing for themselves or their babies, along with children's toys and household items, all free of charge.
