June's Centre offers a variety of programs to support pregnant teenagers as they prepare for the birth of their baby.
Prenatal Classes
Weekly evening prenatal classes are available for pregnant women and their partners or whoever they plan to have with them during labour and delivery. We talk about what to expect during pregnancy and help women prepare for labour and delivery and for taking care of their newborn baby.
Labour Support Program
The Labour Support Volunteers at June's Centre have been trained to support women emotionally and physically during labour.
A Labour Support Volunteer may be involved in various aspects of the pregnant woman's life before she has her baby. She may go with her to prenatal classes, help her develop a birth plan and meet the other people the women may want at her birth. During the woman's labour, a pregnant woman can expect a Labour Support Volunteer to be present during her entire labour and delivery. She will come to her home and be with her at the hospital. After the baby is born, the volunteer can assist and support the new mother with breastfeeding and other aspects of parenting a newborn.
Prenatal Nutrition Program - "Food for Two"
This weekly prenatal care group focuses on health and nutrition during pregnancy. Working in partnership with Toronto Public Health, a dietician and Public Health nurse alternate weekly lessons to co-facilitate the group with a counsellor from June's Centre. Health teaching is done on topics relevant to the pregnant women including opportunities to learn about their nutritional needs during pregnancy. One objective of the program is to reduce the incidence of low birth-weight babies born to teenage parents.
The program includes a food demonstration and an opportunity for the pregnant teenagers to develop skills in nutrition awareness, cooking, budgeting and comparison shopping.
A meal is provided at each group. Participants are encouraged to connect with other prenatal teens and teen mothers and share their birth stories and practical advice about breastfeeding. A food voucher is given to each participant who attends the group.
Our prenatal programs are supported by Health Canada's - "Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program" and by the United Way of Greater Toronto's "Success by 6" program.
