June's Centre recognizes that parenting is a challenging and sometimes stressful responsibility. This is true especially for young people who may lack family support and alternate child care options. In response, June's Centre offers two programs designed to offer temporary breaks for young parents from the responsibilities of caring for their infants and toddlers.
Parent Relief
Parents who need a break for a few hours can arrange, by phoning a day in advance, to leave their child in the care of the staff and volunteers in our nursery. They can leave the centre to attend an appointment or just to have a nap. This gives young mothers time to attend to some of their own business or to take some time for themselves to relieve the inevitable stresses of parenting.
Respite Care
Our Respite Care program offers 24 hour-a-day care for the children of young parents in homes supervised by the Project Coordinator. Most placements are three to five days; however, we can place a child for three weeks in an emergency situation. In many cases, the parents request Respite Care in order to have a weekend off. For some, it provides childcare they can feel comfortable with while they search for housing, seek medical care or move into a new home. Parents remain in contact with the provider and their child during a respite care placement. Often young parents have no child care alternatives.
